Under Alabama law, receiving stolen property constitutes a criminal offense. This crime occurs when an individual knowingly receives, retains, or disposes of stolen property. The “knowingly” aspect of this law means that the person must be aware that the property they are receiving, retaining, or disposing of has been stolen.
Alabama categorizes the crime of receiving stolen property into first, second, third, and fourth degrees, depending on the value of the stolen property. The punishment for each degree varies, with first-degree being the most serious offense and carrying the harshest penalties.
